Why is it starting daily games automatically without me pressing start a new game?

You can't abort tournament/matches. You'll have to resign if you don't want to play. Or let them time out which results in the same outcome.

Unless you are signing up for tournaments or creating random seeks, you won't get games with anyone. You may get challenged, but you can decline those.
In your settings you can set challenges to Friends Only and add your grandchildren as friends. Then use the friend list when sending challenges.
It’s so annoying, I have like 14 daily games going on.
