Exact same thing happened to me. I am emailing chess.com right now to claim my diamond membership.

The site doesn't steal anything.
The promotion is for a one-month diamond trial membership and works like any other trial on site and only basic members can sign up for a trial.
so you're saying we completed 30 quests on Duolingo just to find out that the free trial is something we could've done ourselves the entire time? why did we need Duo then?

You should have received a link and when you used the link an option to Redeem Code that would allow you to sign up for the one-month diamond trial membership.
I finished quest and nothign happened. there was nothign in the code related to chess.com. 
duolingo scammed us so unfair i took me like 20 days to do quests and bam i needed a credit card im like wait what so i reloaded the page and it was gone so sad im only a kid and i dont have a credit card

This is unbeliable. I do not trust putting my credit card information on the internet, so I created a new card with only one use, which is what I do when I want buy things online. That card is not valid for them. It is literally valid on every freaking commerce place. I think that they just hope that some people would forget about it and get their monthly fee.

That error is from a browser extension you have loaded.

According to chess.com, it is to verify that there is a real person behind of the account. The one use card I created satisfy perfectly those conditions.
Furthermore, there are way better methods to achieve that (there are people here complaining about how they don't have cards due to their age). Not only that, but I have four bank accounts due to international businesses. this method doesn't even fulfill its original purpose, as it does not verify that I can not create multi accounts, cause I could create four easily if I wanted.
