I just want to say that some of us take trips, planned at the last minute. Nothing like a buddy calling and inviting you to an impromptu elk hunt, or maybe your wife's had a bad week and needs a quick road trip out to Seattle for some shopping and shows. If I can get out of work for those endeavors, it seems funny that the one place I'd be penalized in a website I pay to use for my relaxation and mental health.

I would play chess every day at the same time, and since I had 1 day/move games, they would kick my vacation on when it got close. But then I'd move.
I think vacation is a great feature. I think that I will not play 1 day/move games anymore. I like 3 days/move because then I have the weekend.
There will always be a need for vacation time, because people do things besides chess. I think if you use vacation time, you should set your status so that others know why you're using it. I think that you can already have no-vacation-time tournaments, because the tournament director can remove people who use vacation.
But mostly, I like that when I couldn't get the computer for a week because we had a new baby, that I didn't lose all my games. It's only a week, and then I'll be back to what I was doing. Is that really so inconvenient?

If there was an ability to setup vacation allowed/denied before a game or tournament begins, everybody could be happy as vacation lovers could join vacation allowed games/tournaments and vacation haters could join vacation denied games/tournaments.

The vacation-haters wouldn't. The tourneys would be terrible quality, and ether have huge timeout percentages or take longer than the vacation-enabled tourneys.
even though i dont know how to activate a vacation.. and lossing many games as a result because of travel i made to remote places with no internet, i do think vacation feature is a necessary evil. No one has a crystal ball that guarantees what will happen tomorrow.. emergency leave, illness, broken computer, virus attack, accidents, etc etc could put a monkey wrench on anyone's intended schedule. so for fair minded people vacation should be allowed.
i do agree with ..oldman above. it is just a game, although the fact my average goes down do hamper my eligibility to join some games. oh well... its just a game.
i would say let us enjoy playing chess and meeting new friends, since we have different obligations to accomplish allowing vacation is a good option for you to have a break and to not to lose your games beacause of bla bla blah. but during tournament games there is no any option for vacation...i hope so.

Here's the thing about automatic vacation. The people who are determined to abuse vacation time by timing out games they don't want to play are going to be quite happy to do it manually if they don't have the automatic option. The only people who would actually lose out on the automatic vacation being removed are people like myself who have had family emergencies and not exactly been thinking about going on a computer to keep my games going at the time. Vacation abusers will just keep on going.
As to the "why do you care so much about a game, why not just let your games time out" comment, why do you care so much about it that you have to complete your games as fast as possible? If you're thrashing someone and they keep on going on vacation, so what? Just beat them even if it takes ages..
instead of taking out vacation, this feature should be synchronized with both online and live chess so one on active vacation should not be able to play until the vacation time is taken off.
