Extreme Lag, Solutions?

Hello. I'm a relatively new member here, but I've searched around for answers to this problem and found none that worked. Maybe someone here can help :)

In Live Chess, I'm having an issue where lag seems to be costing me huge amounts of time -- up to a minute per move. After I submit my move, my opponent seems to think for a long time. His clock counts down normally. Then, suddenly, his clock goes up by a minute and mine goes DOWN by a minute. He still hasn't moved on my screen. Then, his move shows on my screen, and I move almost immediately. However, this whole exchange has cost me a huge amount of time, almost all of which I spent waiting for my opponent's move.

I've checked my ping to Chess.com's servers, it's about 16ms. I'm using Firefox as recommended. I've cleared my browser cache as recommended. What else can I do to fix this? I've switched to playing correspondence chess for the time being, but I really prefer Live games.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hi! Sorry you're having troubles with lag.  Do you have any extensions or plugins on your browser? Do you notice lag is worse when you play at any particular time of day? What version of Firefox are you using? Are you on Windows or Mac?  Have you had this problem since you've joined the site, or is it something that just happened recently?

Sorry for all the questions, but hopefully it will help us get this figured out for you :)

Hi, thanks for your reply. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

I found the cause of the issue: the real-time shields on my antivirus software. For the record, I use Avast. I've gotten around the problem by disabling my real-time shields whenever I'm playing live games.

I hesitate to recommend that others disable their antivirus -- be very careful with your computer's security -- but this is what has worked for me, and I no longer have this issue.

Thanks again for your reply!

Please let me know how it looks now. Just made a configuration change, so please reopen Live Chess if you are logged in right now. Does it change anything in your experience with Antivirus ON or OFF? Thank you

I haven't been able to get a decent game for the last 2 days the lag is always too high. Are there problems with the servers in the UK?

I have 33Mbps download, 2 Mbps upload and ping averaging 20ms.

Nothing has changed my end as far as I am aware - I have tried on my linux laptop and Windows 7 PC - both have the same problem. I am not too technical but the speed tests I have done always show my broadband connection to be the stats mentioned above. Any advice from anyone appreciated.

Don't if anyone has done anything but 2 days with bad lag - now all ok. Fingers crossed it stays like that now. Thanks if anyone has supported.
