No, there is no direct connection between you and your opponent, the chess.com server is always in between.
flooding to win ?
It seems rather out of proportion to deviate a river to flood somebodys house, so his internet malfunctions and you can win a game... :-)
Humm, seems it was kids wifi flooding or internet lag... dunno, in between the server, ah yes, though is it more efficient in north america than in europe or in france toulouse in particular ?!

It is possible to launch a denial of service attack if you know the IP address of your opponent. How to get that address, I'm not sure

I had this weird thing : in the midst of a game I suddenly lost connection and no way did I get reconnected again. Instead, the LED's on my router were blinking like a xmas tree. I actually had to reset my router !
I don't use a cell-phone or any other wifi gadget , just my laptop. So it seems to me there is more going on than we might think. I believe it has something to do with the advertisements : looks like someone is trying to get access to your PC .
Yesterday evening, without any other connection but mine, I had some deconnection issues, with message "The server chess.com is not available" or something like that...

After many disconnections at crutial times, I wonder if people could flood their opponent so that it disconnect and lost many seconds so the game too...
