I won on time, however, it was a draw for "insufficient material"!

# First, both of us players, had sufficient material, even though mine were insignificant.

# Second, Snarfus, my respected opponnent, lost on time!

#Last, I issued a report to Chess.com Member Support.

 that got me no answer.

You can't win with a bishop against a Queen (I will suppose that white blunders away his second one) no matter how badly white plays. There is no mating pattern, anywhere.

If you had a pawn or another minor piece, you would have won on time. A bishop alone is not enough.

This applies for Black material as well- say:

But with the applicable material in that game, there is nothing to be done.

So to summarise: even if you "win" on time, if the remaining pieces on the board do not allow any possible way for you to mate the opponent even with ridiculously inept play or active help on his part, you get only a draw. You can't construct a mating position with King and Bishop against King and two, one or no Queens - even if the oppo is trying to help you.

Noted.

I never knew of that rule, but it is fair. thanks for the elucidation..

I think there must be a bug though. I just played a game where I had a queen, rook, bishop and pawn against my opponent's king. I had just put him in check and the computer ended the game in a draw saying there was 'insufficient material'.

Again: You're out of time, but nothing he does can mate you even with your help --> draw.
