how to challenge

I login to Live chess and find a certain friend who is also logged in, but when I try to challenge him it takes me to the setup for Online chess (that takes days to play).  I have tried the tutorial and do what it says but I keep getting redirected to Online instead of Live.  Any idea what I am doing wrong?

When I let the site do it it picks a random person - I am trying to play a specific friend.  I go to the Friends tab and find my friend and choose the Play link by his name, and a window pops up for me to set the parameters that I want (presets, initial time,etc) but once I get all that set it doesn't issue the challenge to my friend, it issues it as a general challenge and I get random people.
