Both you and your friend have to be in the Live interface to play Live. You can challenge them from there.

I am not able to challenge a friend for a 5/5 or 10 minutes game (via desktop mode).The only option i have is for at least 1 day up to 14 days.
I have to mention that I am able to challenge my friends on mobile for blitz games.
