According to the second post on this forum by a chess.com staff member, https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/the-internet-on-chess-com?page=1, The Live Server crashed and is down for maintenance, which may be why you are having issues. Also, for the side note, it's not fair that you didn't get notified you were disconnected, but I think the reason they only give a few minutes to reconnect is because some people, when losing the game, close the tab and unnecessarily make the other person wait it out until the match is over. The reason for the few minute disconnect time is to prevent this. Also, I know you can just do something else until the game is over after the other person disconnects, but you can't leave your computer because you never know when they will rejoin, play a move, and you can run out of time. Also, if the problem continues, here is a link you can use to help https://support.chess.com/article/213-how-do-i-fix-my-disconnect-lag-issues. If none of this helps, report a bug or contact staff.
Live Chess connection issues?
I doubt it's about the Live Server crash. I played against him and he continued to disconnect but I didn't.
Thank you guys. Yes, I am aware about the server crash yesterday. This has been a reoccurring thing for me for over two weeks. It probably has to do with the servers being overloaded in general, since there is larger-than-usual traffic right now (everyone's stuck inside!). I mainly just wanted to see if anyone else was also experiencing issues. This used to happen to me several years ago also. And for a long time lichess didn't work at all, and now it works fine and chess.com doesn't. Maybe I just have weird internet. ![]()
I am. Will play blitz games and it seems like my opponent is taking a long time. Turns out, they made their move, it looks like their clock is running then when the server catches up, ive lost 40 seconds.

That's what happens to me (in addition to "normal" disconnection when it tells you you're disconnected). It's happened also like you describe except their move never comes through, only for it to then inform me I lost. Refreshing the page seems to help with this situation, although now whenever my opponent takes more than like 5 seconds to move I'm continually refreshing for fear that I'm actually disconnected!
Live Chess seems to work fine on the chess.com app on my phone, so maybe it's my laptop or browser that's the issue. :/
Are you running other videos or have a lots of tabs or other applications opening while playing? That might be the cause.
Thanks but no -- I'm really not that clueless about this sort of thing; I've been playing chess online for ten years. ;P I know all this stuff. I appreciate you trying to help me though! ![]()

Pain in the a...
Tell me about it! Thanks guys for sharing your experiences... hopefully your connections all improve and the issues don't persist for weeks like mine has. Now I'm just using the Android chess, com app for live games, which seems to work fine.
I'm new here and doing a membership trial and have already lost a handful of games because it "disconnects" when I'm winning. Just doing this for fun, but kind of annoying. Not sure it's worth paying for if this happens all the time.
Translation: I offered a draw because I saw that you are struggling with your internet connection. I would rather have a good game that I lost than a game in which I can win because my opponent is distracted. You played a very good game.
You shouldn't always trust google translate, you should only trust it if it says "Community Verified" or it can come out as something else.
Thanks Tyche. ![]()
From my experience Google translate is pretty accurate. There are sometimes grammatical errors or a few poor word choices. One tactic you can use to test the accuracy: translate the English back into Russian then into English again, and see how similar it is.
Someone who knows Russian can clarify the message, but it seems spot on. ![]()
Is anyone else having terrible connectivity issues in live chess? For me, it says I have an "excellent connection" then it will repeatedly disconnect me for no apparent reason. This happens at least 3-4 times per game. I'm lucky if I can get through a single blitz game without this happening. Occasionally it will reconnect quickly, but usually I have to continually refresh the page, or it leaves me staring at the board with my opponent's clock running, only to inform me that "this game is no longer available in live." In other words, I lost the game.
It has been the last couple weeks. Before that this never happened. I have tried every connection setting. I don't think this is a problem with my internet. Everything else works just fine, including other chess servers.
Side note: I think there should be more compensation for disconnection, beyond the one second you get back or whatever it is. Especially if it happens without it even informing you that you are disconnected, like it does for me. At the very least, you should regain part of the time you lost. Or maybe allow more than like 20 seconds to reconnect; that's not enough time.
I am highly frustrated. Anyone experiencing similar issues or have any advice?

I haven't played a lot of live chess here, especially blitz and bullet. Part of the reason is that I don't enjoy chess when I'm trying to play against the clock as much as the position. However, I have also had times when I have lost due to being "disconnected". The most recent was a few days ago: I made my first move and waited. The other player didn't move. Then I saw messages that indicated that my opponent was disconnecting frequently. My connection seemed fine - with the free time, I even loaded a web page in another browser, so I knew my connection was good. Then my opponent's first move appeared and as I was making my next move, I received notice that I had lost! I sent a message to chess.com. Their reply took a few days, but the response was basically "It sucks doesn't it". They are just hurting themselves with this: I was about to purchase an upgraded membership here, but have decided to spend that money elsewhere. Also, except for challenges from people I know - I'm done with the shorter time controls here.
