I ain't reading all that.  but I always disable chat, I want to play chess, not chat with a bunch of bundles of sticks.  the thing that irks me is the "are you still here" message.  It is not for them to know

There is no point in enabling the chat, unless you're willing to put up with people calling you, I quote, "A Somalian gayboi", "g a y", telling you, I quote, "f u k you", "coward", "idiot", "you're too lucky" and whatnot - or gloating over their win, calling you "weak", "loser" and so on.

I do not put up with such behavior in meatspace, and I do not put up with such behavior online. The difference is, online I can actually shut these people down without even having to say a word, and I thank Chess.com administration for that.

I'm sorry if it comes of as offensive, but I simply refuse to give any space from my brain to such people's pathological behavior. Life is much too short for that.

It's interesting to me to hear the different opinions on this. For me, chess is a social game. There is no point in playing if you can't talk to your opponent. In my opinion, if you aren't going to talk or interact with your opponent, it makes more sense to just play against a computer, where they don't talk back.

I don't understand the advantage of playing a person who doesn't communicate with you verses a computer that also doesn't communicate with you.

I have  a wife I don't think she would like me "chating" with some girl except her.

Besides its not social I just like winning.

I respect your opinion Sir. However my personal take, after 10 years at this wonderful website, is that every second counts in 3 minute blitz. For this reason I always keep chat disabled at all times now. It's not that I don't like or don't respect other players, but even saying "Good Luck" could cost me the game at this time frame. Don't laugh. It's happened.

I always thought the people who disabled chat were kids and their parents make them disable chat.

Yeah well unless you wanna get called "b I t c h", loser, f a g g o t, "you got lucky, now you run" or have random emojis like the winking emoji everytime you make a move then you should disable it. But I think it's funny so I leave mine on.

I'll have to disagree. There are so many users here on chess.com that end up writing filthy, racist stuff in the game chat. I used to ignore and just report but now I fight back (respectfully, I assure you)...I mostly prefer to disable the game chat. It's a good measure if you want to seriously play chess and not get hit by this nonsense.

I like this approach. You let them do their thing and you just beat them... And once you get into a winning postion, give them the taste of their medicine... Not bad. I approve.

I understand all the reactions. But for me, I have met some of the nicest people on God's green earth right in those chats. Sure I get jerks and I immediately turn chat off for them. But I LIKE being able to say, "Oh wow, that was a great move!" I appreciate good play no matter which side of the board.

So I leave Chat on and I welcome conversation. And to the new friends I've met along the way, either from these Chats or from Forums ... just know I am very glad I took the risk. But yes, that is just me and I DON'T condemn anyone who feels otherwise. Peace.

I prefer the chat disabled. Experience suggests there is a 50/50 chance any message will be rude or obnoxious. I remember an Egyptian who chose to disparage Scots. I retaliated with some negative comments about Sisi. He won, unfortunately and then had the nerve to send a Friend offer. I blocked and reported him but nothing happened.

My experience is that 95% of the time even if chat is enabled, my opponent doesn't write anything at all. It's funny how different users can have such different experiences on chess.com.

I can't stand people who think they are entitled to me conversing with them.

People write stuff on the Web that would put them in a hospital emergency department if they said it face to face. Chess.com merely reflects this, but why set yourself up for being belittled? Chess is hard enough without verbal abuse from jerks being thrown into the mix.

Chatting while playing is an integral part of coffehouse chess, and that is that. It has no place in rated games.

You all sound like a bunch of stuffy boring people. It's one thing to not wish to chat - just leave it off. It's another to criticize those who enjoy chatting. Some of the most fun I've had is chatting

Well, there's chatting and chatting. I remember an over the board game where an onlooker mentioned that my opponent's queen was in danger. Hanging, if I recall. The warning allowed him to save his queen. I said "f**k off" to the onlooker and a physical fight nearly started.
