Move confirmation

Why is it not illegal in daily then ?

When chess is played OTB, there is a physical board and physical chess pieces and the players do not need to use a computer mouse or a touch screen to move the chess pieces. Online chess is not the same as OTB chess and it is perfectly fine for online chess to have  special accommodations for playing chess on a computer screen.

I've often wondered if an in person OTB Bullet Game would be better played by using a computer screen and a mouse or touch screen instead of trying to moving physical chess pieces around a board very fast.

the confirm button can be equivalent to pressing the clock, so no 'cheating by taking back move'

pls implement move confirmation

That is only for daily chess. This discussion is about live chess.

In daily chess you are allowed to use an analysis board to try out different lines.  So moving and seeing your move before it is officially made is ok in daily.

The otb rule is normally touch move not clock move, and touching a piece means you have to move that piece.  So move confirmation allows you to make a move, see it, them take it back, which is cheating.

Can you imagine in these on line grandmaster tournaments like the magnus series going on right now, where gms would make a move, retract it, try another, retract it, then finally confirm their third choice?  Prosperous!  That's not real chess.

mouseslip occurs with a piece u already want to move

the move confirmation button is requested to prevent mistakes of mouseslip.

Right.  But the professionals treat mouse slips as part of the game.  They don't change a fundamental rule disallowing "take backs", in order to solve the mouse slip issue.

how is this still a thing after almost a decade of us asking for it? My daily games have a confirmation button but these bloody live games (where it's just as important!) dont?? So sick of blundering my queen because my mouse button mislicks. Frig.

Then turn it off. And generally, it should be off by default.

You really don't get the point. Turn it off for your opponent? Very clever. The point is (for all the dudes here who don't read the thread carefully) ! IF THE OPPONENT PLAYS ON IOS OR ANDROID HE HAS THE ADVANTAGE OF MOVE CONFIRMATION WHILE PEOPLE PLAY ON BROWSERS DON'T HAVE THIS ADVANTAGE ! I hope now even the last hillbilly got the point.

But the advantage, which I view as cheating, should be taken away from those who have it,  rather than giving it to everyone.

True though, whichever solution chosen should be the same for all players.

But letting people move a piece, take their hand off to look at the position, then grab the piece and move it back, just goes against the rules of the game, and what people are asking for is the computer equivalent to that OTB example.

except it wont be used for that. It's a total difference. On a board you don't accidentally pick up the wrong piece. Can't believe we have to explain this. An optional confirm move option will not hurt anyone.  Misclicks happen and this simple solution will prevent them. Not even usable for blitz/bullet so why are people getting mad at this

This argument makes me crazy. If these people would stop and think about it for a second, the problem they have is with the Analysis board. Not move confirmation. I have never in my life accidentally moved my Queen from a1 to h8 accidentally. I have in online chess because of human interface devices glitching out.

The fact that they think move confirmation is cheating just leads me to believe they are the kind of pedantic pains in the butt that want to win in any way possible, whether it's bunk fromage or not

Lord_Ultron

also you can just hover the piece over the square to see  the position after that move and then change your move

OK, since the admins of this website completely ignore the point, I do like this: On iOS I play with chess.com on macOS I play with lichess.org

Scallion905

2021 and would still love this option!

An extra "confirm" would be detrimental to anyone under time constraints. Bad idea.

It really wouldn't. Anyone who loses to time running out would lose to that regardless. Plus, if someone is running low on time, they may be even more prone to missclick due to being on edge. It is more of a leap in logic that the player will lose to time if they have to confirm. It should at least be an option for the computer version.
