It should be instant: in a perfect world. What probably happened here was lag-delay between your computer and chess.com servers.
I feel your pain-losing on time by a fraction of a second is one my nightmares.

Sadly I just lost a game where I had 0.2 seconds left on my clock and and I premoved my final move, which was checkmate, but got the "black wins on time" message before it registered the mate. Although it was a fun and exciting finish, I was wondering, how much time does it take to make a premove? I'd always assumed it was instant.
