In your loss against benmertz you probably didn't notice something important. After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Black has a 2 vs. 1 pawn majority in the center. Black pawns at d7 and e6 vs, White pawn at e4. It is an advantage that endures into the endgame. No other opening allows Black to get that kind of long term advantage so early in the opening. Might be worth learning to play it as Black.
