What do you think of people who inflate their rating by playing only patzers?

Yeah, that Carlsen dude is such a cheater. He only plays people rated lower than himself.

Anyone who tries to raise their ratings by playing only opponents rated lower than themselves will not gain much either in ratings or in skill.

Carlsen is #1, everyone is lower rated than him

facepalm

Those who think they can raise their rating by only playing patzers, really do not understand the math.  Players get tired and can make a mistake against anybody and lose a game even against a "patzer".  In the long run, you gain nothing playing against "patzers" This is the math.

On a practical basis it is really a stupid thing to do as you hurt your chess playing abilities if you only play "patzers" and what do you gain?

Your rating can be inflated, but only to a point.  And yes, every game puts all of those gains at risk, but to say that it's not possible at all to inflate your rating by doing this is just plain incorrect.

I am saying it is not possible in the long run. In the short run you can win one game and raise your rating a small amount.

It is a bad idea to try and raise your rating by playing players far lower than you.  There are several r easons this is a bad idea.

Carlsen does not play players rated 500 points below him.

ponz111;  Opinion Requested;  What would you think of a guy who has a USCF rating of 1859, playing against a kid who is 980??

EthanLow

I would like to be the kid who is 980.

Who else can you play on here. Nothing but patzers.

SmyslovFan

Ronald, the player with the 1859 rating would gain no rating by beating such a player. The higher rated player risks his rating for nothing.

Wow BM is back! Haven't seen u around in a long time!

Good advice for macer. Very good advice.

By playing only patzers, your rating will improve somewhat, but you will never actually improve, so your rating will eventually stall. Plus, lose a game and your rating drops a bunch.

You hit the spot my friend!

My thought.

What do you think about guys who only play people rated higher than themselves to artifically pump up theur rating?

After all, when they lose they will hardly lose any rating points, but then they get one win and its huge.

I think cheaters like this who only play high rated people as a cheap way to float up their ratings should be banned. For life. From everything. They shouldnt even be allowed on a bus. They should walk, just like that brain surgeon dude. If walking through a blizzard is good enough for him, it should be good enough for everyone.

I will not play anyone who won't accept challenges from a player rated the same as themselves (for example, if a player sends out seeks only for players rated +200 above them). If they aren't good enough to accept their own challenges, they aren't good enough for me to accept their challenge either!

I know, many coaches tell their students to "play up". It's good advice. But the only way that advice can work is if you're also willing to "play down" occasionally.

Same as cheaters, sandbaggers etc.. I dont care.. It is perhaps one game out of 100 here on chess.com so what do you care? If you play a game and learn from it, then thats fine. Who cares if it was a computer, a master on a for-fun-account or anything in between? Play the board not the player!

Fairly good advice. Still, these creeps will gain points by ever so slowly.

And when they eventually play a player rated the same as them, they would be completely steamrolled.

Yes, I think so too. I must applaud EthanLow.

Jion_Wansu

What about people who play patzers (like me) to deflate their ratings...

EthanLow

You can play me.

EthanLow

Good game! (very)
