kco you are not funny
Why Abort?

You're such a cynic (but of course, you're quite correct).
I suspect some of the problem comes from members placing a Seek Ad, responses being very slow going for whatever reason, then wandering off and being unaware of when someone's responded. This happening infrequently is one thing, but perhaps for some members, they do this quite a lot.

Actually Grobe optimism is the opposite of cynicism. FWIW The definition of a pessimist is " an optimist with experience".

You aborted before giving your opponent a "full" (~120 seconds+, I believe) chance to reconnect. Lesson learned, I hope.

I've only been on chess.com for a few days, and already I've aborted twice - once before my first move, the other before my second move. Once I realized that by some error I had entered a 10' Game instead of a 30', and the other time something was screwy with my computer, and I could only see about 48 of the 64 squares on the chess board - the whole right side of the board (N-R files) was covered. I got a warning the second time I aborted, so I've been trying to be careful not make those types of mistakes again.

I don't think it's "three strikes you're out", it's more like a ratio kinda deal. Well, it could be 'three' if you'd hardly played through any games, I suppose.
I suspect if you abort more than say, 10% of your match-ups, then you'll trigger warnings and subsequently, penalties.

Cynic.
ahhh susanG, I think kco meant: turn off chat as soon as the game window opens - that way, you don't get exposed to the rudeness and personal questions.
thanks I've tried that:) but I do like to be able to say good game or thank people for the game. Most people are fine, it's just one or two who spoil it! Anyway I've not had any trouble since I changed my picture last week!! :)
******* may have violated our Fair Play policy - it has been noted and they may have their account restricted.
I digress somewhat but this "fair play policy" seems to me to to be getting a little intrusive. Although I am not sure, I can only think that my opponent's "crime" [if I may call it that] seems to have been not resigning a game he could not win.
Is it unfair to fight on till the bitter end ?

I'm not sure what triggered the message in this case, but if your opponent didn't just get up and walk away, with or without shutting off the browser, then there's no harm / no foul. Fighting on till the bitter end is all good.

Strangely enough, this is the very point I tried to make about aborting games.

Hello,
And if, (let's say i am playing a 5 minutes blitz live chess), the opponent logg off after 2 minutes (realizing his position is lost), is there a way to abort the game, or say the game is lost for the opponent? I am fed up with those guys who can't just hit the resign button...

Agreed, it's a pain. We log a disconnect against their account whenever this happens... If they do it frequently, they end up restricted.
I don't know if this was covered or not, but I think sometimes a person aborts because of the time or rating. When a challenge comes up does it give this information? Maybe that might cut down on the aborts. JENTZEN so you dont mind your opponent aborting games when you want to play? Yes you can issue a new challenge but what if they abort or you get the previous opponent and they abort again? Anyways where I come from we believe in adopting not aborting.
MDWallace, I think you're right, people do sometimes abort because of the time or rating. I've mentioned this before several times, but on live chess my challenges don't show up right on the graph. For example, a 2min/10sec game shows up as a 10 minute game and a 1min/5sec game as a 5 minute game. I really think this bug needs to be fixed before people are penalised for aborting games. I don't know if this is just a bug on my games or if it's the same for everyone?
I agree with JENTZEN, I don't mind at all if people abort a game in the first few seconds, it's not a problem, and I can understand why they are if they think it's a 5 minute game and it's really a 1 minute game.
I hardly ever abort games, but I just had a game with a friend aborted by the server because I was writing 'hi and good luck' in the chat box before I moved!!
yeah but what if is was a nice gentleman like me.
