Why would someone resign and not finish the game ( my first post )

I'm relatively new to this website and I noticed 70% of opponent will almost quick to resign soon as the Queen is captured. I mean, if that's the mentality, I'm not sure if a new beginner like me could improve the skill because seems like people loose everything soon as they no longer have the Queen. I'm not an expert but this is only my two cents, why would you not finish the game see what you can improve.

I wish there is a programmer of this website could read this and they would improve a system that banned player to resign soon as we captured their Queen.  If they would like to resign at least stay for few secs or make one or two moves and then off.

This is really annoying, esp when we are almost finish the game, and people just  don't have respect. I know this is an online game, but would you do that in real life? Ha!

It is true that the loss of a queen is not necessarily fatal when new players are involved. Grandmasters like Ben Finegold and Aman Hambleton tell players to never resign.

I assume you are talking about games like this:

Looking at the game posted, it seems like the opponent was tilted too, you could have captured the queen on f4 @sophiebar a few moves earlier. I think when I'm tilting I'm quick to resign too, I sometimes feel hopeless after a few bad losses.

Congrats of your first post! You've asked an important moral and practical question a lot of newer players ought to ask themselves. This article by @gserper will help you out!

https://www.chess.com/article/view/what-is-a-proper-moment-to-resign-a-game?

If you're relatively new here then be sure to check out more of his articles (chess.com<learn<articles). They are very entertaining and most (especially his older ones) are directed at inexperienced players and they are pretty much one of the best things here on chess.com! Hope you have a blast! happy.png

Good question, but as you've realised yourself, you will improve more quickly than those people, generally speaking.

Sorry, but honestly it is ridiculous to ban people for resigning. Resigning is a form of acknowledgement of loss and respect. What is disrespectful is when people let the time run out and just leave. I know what you mean tho, you want to play it out like with a family member or friend on a board and enjoy the checkmates or comebacks. However, this is competitive chess and it is allowed to resign at any point given, even considered to be fairplay.

I understand what you mean as I also resign pretty often when I lose my queen. But to most people, losing a queen will typically end in a loss, unless the other person  blunders, or you do an amzing move.

I find what you say about banning someone when they resign after they lose a queen ridiculous, because then you'd ban like 90% of chess.com. I get that you like the feel of a checkmate, but why would you keep playing when your basically gaurenteed to lose? That is especially true once you start getting to 1200 or so, as they won't blunder as much.

Many beginners including myself, don't play games out, which you will find helps you a lot. I reccomend just playing as you usually do, and try not to resign if you can avoid it.

(when i talk about myself, i mean like before not now)

Also depends on your opponent. If you're playing a 300 rated patzer, you shouldn't resign even if you're in great material odds. There is a high chance that they might blunder (and that would be an even bigger blunder than yours most often) and you may be able to salvage a draw or even a full point (if you're lucky).

On the other hand if your playing a strong opponent who has been constantly giving you hard slaps throughout the games, then there is no point in continuing the hopeless fight; you are asking to be humiliated. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody resigned against Carlsen just after move one after realizing they are black. It's a hopeless struggle. In the following game black realizes that they're dealing with an entity much more divine that Carlsen himself, and understandably resigns after losing just a mere pawn:

If the game has no stakes other than rating, I resign if I have no compensation and my only hope is that my opponent blunders. I don't like hoping that my opponent messes up and feel no sense of accomplishment if they do. If they hang their queen, I never feel like I won as much as I feel they lost. I don't get excited about it. If you do, keep playing.

thing50

If I am playing a player of equal strength there is no way I am giving him the pleasure of thrashing me when he is a queen up!

Of course you resign!!

A queen is worth: 4 minor pieces...or 2 rooks....or 8 pawns!!

See? You have your own way of judgement over what is a true win in your eyes and what isn't aswell. So do I.

If they are hopelessly losing, they want to end their suffering sooner.happy.pnggrin.png

Not a good idea. This encourages players to play on in hopeless situations more than half of the time. I would not want to play a position which I will eventually lose more than 95% of the time. At my level, blunders are no longer seen on a regular basis. Of course, I do play on from time to time depending on the situations and I have averted a position while down a queen before, but more than 75% of the time, I resign.

You will understand this as you gain more experience and gain rating, where blunders become less common.

That said, I do feel that players at your level should try and make a comeback since blunders are likely even for the queen-up player.

Well, since the queen is so overpowered and valuable, if you lose it without any way to win it back, eventual check mate, or REALLY good compensation, you might as well be wasting time continuing the game since your opponent can easily win with that extra queen. Unless you're playing another very low rated player, this is probably the best way to go since you will only be delaying the inevitable.

Duck

So... basically you're upset at winning a game?

As a beginner I understand what you are trying to say. However, as you climb up the ladder in rating, you will realize that being heavily down in material is already a lost game except your opponent blunders.

The higher the rating the lower the chances that they will blunder a completely winning position. So people resign because they don't see any chance of getting back into the game.

Learn to accept resignation. It is part of the game. If you will like to improve your endgames, check out some videos on certain endgame and maybe practice with the computer.

very well said thank you happy.png basically I dont give up right away when someone captured my Q's  IMO I can learn how to potentially "kill" even just with the "weakest person in the room"
