A very hard mate in 1!!

Can you find the answer:

                         White mates in 1

Frankwho

Black just took on f3 en passant so the f4 pawn is supposed to be gone. Then White plays Nf4.

This was the only answer I could think of.

White: Re5, then mate with queen?

ChessisGood

Is this some kind of joke?

That is quite clever :-)

I thought it was supposed to be one of those upside-down board problems (e.g. Q"e5"#), but if it is, the coordinates throw the whole thing off.

Adriandmen

Yes Frankwho, I like the way you're thinking, but 1.Nf4 isn't the keymove Frown.

if anyone is reaaaaaaally bored... i'd like to see the move list that ends in this position

nevermind... it's obviously not possible :) black needs 8 captures to get the pawns there but white is only missing 4 pieces.

JamieKowalski

Actually I'm pretty sure it is not a position that can be reached legally. There are only four missing White pawns, and the Black pawns have been displaced by more than four files.

Frankwho

I think the position is illegal, but I might be wrong.

axhed

i think we were counting at the same time ha ha ha

Adriandmen

Oops, didn't thought about that Embarassed. Well, that doesn't make any difference for the answer, but the position is illegal... Sorry about that.

axhed

since the sun has passed through the plane of the milky way galaxy, i'd like to move that f pawn to e4. clearly the laws of physics, and chess, no longer apply today.

There is no mistake in the diagram...

JamieKowalski

Perhaps there is a mistake in chess itself. I have often considered this.

The answer is "no". What do I win?

Haha, lol... I like your answer.

I don't see mate in one. Mate in one means the next move is checkmate.

That means the next move has to be a check that the black king cannot escape from. There are only five possible checks in the diagram:

1) BxB. Not mate. Black can recapture with the pawn.

2) Rxp. Not mate. Black can recapture with the pawn.

3) Qxp. Not mate. Black can recapture with the pawn.

4) Qd4+. Not mate. Black can recapture with c5 pawn.

5) Nc3+. Not mate. Black can recapture with the pawn.

No other possible checks.. So no possible mate in one. Unless there's an invisible piece somewhere that I'm not seeing. :D

Qxe5+ (or Rxe5+) is a fun mate in two, though!
