Zermelo, Rc2+ is not the solution. As has already been pointed out, Bf8 is the solution. If Rc2+, Kb1 and there is no mate in 1.

solution for Zermelo

that is 3moves

the question is "can you mate in 2moves?"

Zermelo

Kxe1.. if Bxb2 then Qc2+, if Qd2 then Rxd2+, if Rxd3 then Qc2+, etc..

Nytik

If you would all please stop arguing about the solved puzzle! 1. Bf8 Kxb2 2. Qa3#!!!!!!! Stop trying to wreck the solution, which is perfect and the ONLY mate in 2.

Because your suggested moves lead to mate in 3... we want mate in 2 moves from the starting position.

rgboy.. your solution does not work because of pf4 and there is no mate in 2. It appears there is no mate in 2. Lol

well...uh... as far as I can tell-

1. Rb1+ Kd2.

2.Bb4# Nice puzzle, very odd position.

Bb4 is not mate... take another look.

How about  1. Rc2+ (double check), Kb1, 2. Rc1# (double check).

Ka2.

I posted before knight takes e1.  Any move from black is mate reguardless.

The problem was composed by Sam Loyd (and is something like 150 years old).  Probably not too many cooks gonna come around at this late date...

you are right tonydal...but not 150 its 120 years old.....

I think Nxe1 is  also a solution.

If after 1.Nxe1 black plays 1... Qc6

then 2.Ra2#
