Endgame Puzzles!

This topic is for posting endgame puzzles only. I think I can safely say that most of us need more endgame practice and what better way to get it?

How many times have you thrown away or tied a game you were winning during the ending? Well it just happened to me. Here is a snapshot of the game right before I went wrong, I was playing as black.

As black what would you do here to win?

If you said move the king (which is what I did) then with best play you draw. Let's see if you can solve it.

Please feel free to add your own puzzles as long as they are endgame ones!

Now whats the quickest way to solidify the win from the position earlier?

This endgame situation represents what to do if you are facing a rook with a bishop. The key is to get your king onto the opposite color corner as that of your bishop. If you do this then your bishop can be used as an effective shield.

The post n°11 (nyLsei) has an incorrect solution. The position is drawn after 5...f3 ?. And 6....Kf4 is stronger than the "solution" as it tries to trap White (but it is still drawn). More details in the move list.

How do you defend with White ?

And now, the full puzzle, corrected version :

The classic "the pawn is mightier than the rook" : (if you already solved post #8 you should be cautious !)

White to draw.

An alternative solution to post #20... I would choose it in real game because it does not leave room for blunders (knight forks for example) and it is pretty simple to evaluate if you are familiar with rook endgames.

For the others it is a good training to rook endgames ! Don't forget to read all the lines. The knowledge of the "bridge" method to win Lucena's position is needed to fully understand the notes (see for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucena_position).

(Note that the mainline could be made shorter but I wanted to show the maximum of ideas)
