Whoops. Its epic defense not epid cdefense

I missed Black's fourth move. Nice puzzle. Where does it come from?

ajian

It comes from Jacob Aagard's Practical Chess Defense.

Thanks. I have some books from Aagaard, but this one is on my wish list at the moment.

ajian

Yeah it's really good since it teaches you alot of things that are really difficult to learn. helps to find saving, even winning resources when faced by seemingly overwhelming attacks

VibrantMoves

I failed at Black's 8th move coz I couldn't see Kf8. Or shall I say? I didn't see the most obvious moves. Qxb2 is forced as the rook is being targeted and has no square to move. Amazing puzzle. Thanks for posting!

ajian

Well the rook can move to b7 right? Qxb2 is just the most practical move since after finding this in a real game you are likely to be in serious time trouble. Also Kf8 is forced or else after finding all those brilliant moves, you loseCry.

VibrantMoves

No, the rook can't move to b7. After e7, black loses queen or it's mate on h8.

ajian

Oh yeah. Whoops. Good find. That would be a horrible way to lose too.

nice!

Thanks

Uh...'Practical defense'? How is this position 'practical'?

ajian

well the book teaches you how to think defensively. And this is a perfectly possible position. it could arise from a closed sicilian, open, lots of stuff
