Mate in 64!!

sorry Pktitun, you may want to install a new chess engine if the output you are getting is 'just die, pls'. Fritz 6 will usually give moves, so you should go buy that. maybe someone will do a forumkill since people don't seem to understand silliness anymore. it was just a simple joke to express the idea that there is no 'solution' to chess. sorry to strain everyones brain. for the few that 'got it', thnx

Doh! Sorry for my ignorance Embarassed

ErrantDeeds

I'm confoosed. I have no idea what this puzzle means, please explain.

Goodness me; there are some rather uncharitable comments on this thread. We're all chums here, let's all get along now.

mate in 64!! ?

64!! is a huge number! (64-factorial) factorial - are you sure the 50-move rule (or the *logical-justification-wise* special case 3 move rep.) won't be in the way? [plus, even if you play at a nanosecond a move, the universe will end long before checkmate is in sight of the not-so-gifted :)]

someone missed the joke?

I thnk that you might have forgotten a little about factorial!

The factorial of any number call it "n" is defined  as n!=n(n-1) (n-2)...2.1. As an example 4!, factorial 4,is equal to, and I do realize that you do know this, is the 4x3x2x1or 24.

Now 64!! is this a double factorial? or simply a chess annotation as !! means  a very strong or brilliant move?

well I cannot see how 64!! can be annotation seeing as 64 is a number not a move, and yes the standard interpretation of 64!! is (64!)!, that is, gamma(1+gamma(65)) where the gamma function is of course defined by analytic continuation, starting from definition on the right half-plane as gamma(z)=integral(0 to inf) t^(z-1)e^(-t)dt. [I am writing quasi-tex, NOT pseudoTEX, as prev poster is unlikely to understand TEX..)] ---  and yes, for non-negative real integers n, factorial(n) that is gamma(n+1) does turn out to be n*gamma(n), and gamma(1)=1 from def. [being integral(0 to inf) exp(-t)dt], so the previous poster is right in a schoolchildish way...

But if you define 64! as 64x63x62x..x1 [rather than prove it] then you are not going to understand the proof of the Fermat-Wiles theorem in a hurry... nor do I seeing you cracking the Reimann Hypothesis..

But isn't 42 the Answer to Life, the Universe, and everything? Hm... This could be an attempt at a reference.
