why didn't he just take your knight with the pawn this is stupid

The pawn cannot take the knight because that would uncover a check from the rook at b2, therefore the king move to a8 is the only legal move.

It's a good puzzle... Black's Pawn is pinned to the King because of the Rook on b2.
