why would white play for a draw here? I think that white should easily be able to win.

Yes White probably was in the better position, I should have said that it was an unorthadox puzzle, the point being 'can you work it out?' as a logic problem rather than finding what would be the best playable move in a game. That's why I made the object to find a draw(which is more or less forced). It was worked out from the stalemate backwards. The winning moves for white should be reasonably obvious, but the draw slightly more difficult.
