Hi, I'd like to submit the last 3 moves from my game as a puzzle, starting with 43 Kg1 (forced mate in 3).

I can't figure out how to generate a puzzle or I'd do the problem so everyone could see.

44... f4 works as well.

Not true. 44... f4 would allow Re5+ and mate is lost. Put it in the computer if you don't believe me.

re5+ kc2.  But the other sequence is clearly stronger.

Kc2 is an illegal move, but if you mean kd2 then the computer puts the advantage all the way to .37 for white after Nf6. only decent line after Re5+ for black is to block with the bishop, then white is forced to give up the exchange to prevent mate.

If anything these two comments are proving that this would be a good TT.

TheIronDuke

White King is on g1, so black king is blocked from moving Kf2.

True. 44... f4 45. Re5+ Kf2 46. Re2+ Kxe2 and mate is in the next move. Your engine must have a bug if it disagrees.

Nope, on move 44 it's on h2.

No, it isn't. They both mate.

TheIronDuke

I was for some reason looking from move 43, your right, mate is just one move slower. My apologies.

A sideline from one of my recent games, slightly altered to make more clear.

From one of my OTB games

I know that it is ambiguous after the second move, but i think that the puzzle is quite instructive regarding pieces pinned to the king, and how they cannot defend anything, even mate

This one was OTB:

@snar, maybe your puzzle should start with black (the computer) playing f6 so that white's first move is Bd5+.

Why? is there a move vastly better than Qh4?

LegoPirate

What happens after 1...Kf8 ? After Bh6 Kg8 Re5, Black moves either knight to e4.

idk.  It just seems like it would be easier to see Bd5+ than Qh4 lol.  maybe there should be 2 versions, an easy one and a hard one.

Maybe, but Qh4 isn't that hard to see once you see the bishop on h6, the dark squared weaknesses, plus the fact you know that this is a puzzle.

It's a good puzzle as a warning of the dangers of a fianchettoed bishop getting traded off, even for a rook, like what happened in the game

Metaknight, I'm curious about this one:

Since there are so many possible ways for this to continue, I'm doubting it will be selected.

SourMongoose

I have checked it with an engine.

StrategicusRex

Hmm....so what's the continuation after 2. Bxg2?

SourMongoose

oh, then 2...Ne2+, winning the queen. Think you coulda saw that.

StrategicusRex

D'oh.....I'm a dorkfish.  Overlooked that.  Sorry!  :D

Page21 submissions:

ClavierCavalier, unfortunately the Fischer v Spassky problem is ambigous as 1…Nf6 2.Qe5 (+6) is an alternative winning line.

Thankyou Spieler999, 1…Na5 2.Qa5 (+1.7) and 2.Qb3 (+0.46) isn’t enough of a difference in gain, so I’ve started this tricky puzzle 2 moves later. 124th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=468375

For similar reasons your variation 125th puzzle also starts later http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=401415

Thankyou Powerlevel_9001 for the 126th puzzle http://www.chess.com/tactics/server?id=436681

Now summer holidays are over, I should catch up over the next week or so.
