Manually adjusting someones rating is cheating. At least I know cheating is legal now on here. xD.
Um.. the words "Cheating" and "legal" just don't go together.

he means that cheating is not legal. well "this" if considered cheating, then only this type of cheating is illegal. ok?
he's just saying cheating and legal don't go together. a thing usually can't be legal and... cheating (which is illegal), so it leans towards this thing is legal and illegal. which don't go well together, if not not making sense.
What do you mean by that ?
If something is legal then it cannot be considered "cheating", whatever you may think about it.

And precisely who was cheated? I'd rather they adjust the ratings than have someone come in 1000 points underrated and clobber me in a game in order to "earn" his true rating. It's no more cheating than arbitrarily assigning a total beginner a rating of 1200 to start is.

I think I said it better. lol

A titled player would earn over 2400 on here easily by there own accord so why would it be considered cheating is beyond me. Check out the average players 2200 and there OTB rating which are harder to get the the chess.come ratings for the same level and then u tell me its not fair that masters and above get 2200 to start with. Use common sense and you clearly see they deserve that level at the least on here. If they didn't deserve it they would drop anyway so stop concerning yourself with their ratings and focus on ur own. That's my opinion anyway not that it means that much.
All of the rating systems start new players at 1200. In the rating system this is the equivalent of a beginning player. You have the opportunity to move higher if you win games, lower if you lose. There is a formula, although I can't remember excactly what it is, that calculates up and down moves based on win/loss against other rated players. If you beat a highly rated player, you gain something like 200 rating points. Your "real" rating will be about right after 10-20 games. Everybody has to start somwhere.
But it's weird that in Chesscube, every player starts from 1500. Wonder why...
And for FIDE players, what rating do they start at? 1200? Or 0?
blah blah blah... chess.com sets the rules, everyone starts at 1200, and if you cant accept this explanation from other members then take your concerns to those in charge of Chess.com, reminds me of my younger sister when i was young, when she asked.."why is there air"? and no matter what answer you gave, she would ask "but why"...
That's cheating.
I figured someone would get annoyed at that. 1stly, if the site decide it's ok, then it's not cheating.
2ndly, what's the big deal? It just gets them closer to their predicted site rating. And I think most people are here just to learn or have fun, not care that much about ratings anyway. If you do care about it, then if they aren't as good as 2200 or better then them starting with that rating shouldn't make much difference..
