Ads on chess TV?

MrMars

why do I still see ads in chess.com TV? I am a premium member, I thought that purchasing membership removed ALL Ads.

I feel deceived.

baddogno

The ads don't come from chess.com.  They come from the company providing the streaming service.  Use an ad blocker and they'll go away.

MrMars

why should I have to use an ad blocker?

@OP: Chess.com can only promise that Chess.com won't give you ads. Third parties can still advertise.

Some time ago, Chess.com used to use Meebo chat, which ran from the bottom of the web browser. Some premium members complained about seeing ads, but those ads were supplied by Meebo, not Chess.com. Therefore, Chess.com could do little to stop the ads.

Those ads and people's complaints of them may be one reason why Chess.com discontinued Meebo chat.

MrMars

ok but since I still am on chess.com, and not some third party, I feel as though I should not receive any advertisements at all.

Kansha

MrMars,

I will just confirm what everyone said. We use Livestream to run Chess.com/tv thus we are not responsible for any of the ads, Livestream is, since we are using their video interface on our site.

Also, as previously stated by our wonderful and very helpful members, you may use adblock to completely eliminate ads when watching chess.com/tv.

MrMars

still think you should uphold your promises.

We did but we're not responsible for the ads that appear on chesstv, those come from Livestream themselves. We are looking at other packages to replace it (and not having ads on it is high on the list)

SomeDayKing

It would be nice if you provided an ad-free video streaming experience. It is disingenuous to say that chess.com is not responsible. Chess.com is ultimately in control of our video streaming experience.

It would be much more satisfying if you explained that you *are* responsible, and you are working to remove them. If there is some mitigating circumstance you are referring to, for example chess.com was caught offguard when livestream began injecting ads after a year of using their service, it might help to explain that.

MrMars

well thanks for clearing things up Kohai. I really enjoy not having ads anywhere on the site and it is frustrating when it shows up on ChessTV.

I understand it may not be your live-streaming programs, but still, I think it should be chess.coms responsibility to remove ADs from all aspects of chess.com, including ChessTV.

I shouldn't have to use an ADBlocker. I don't know how to use them, and I won't

ChezBoy

I dont think that's possible, being techy myself.

MrMars

Anything is possible ChezBoy.

ChezBoy

I do think you're right. I also wasn't trying to be rude the post before.Laughing

MrMars

lol no I understand that perhaps it will be difficult, but who knows? Even if they have to make their own livestreaming program. I think they can do it!

Chess.com is awesome, and I really love this site.

@MrMars

I'm 67 and the farthest thing possible from being technically proficient; some would even use the term retroLuddite to describe me since I refuse to carry a cell phone.  If I can figure out how to use an adblocker, anyone can. Laughing

MrMars

Baddongno, that is besides the point.

baddogno

Not if you want to watch ad free Chess.com TV! Laughing

OK I get your point MrMars and my reaction the first time an ad showed up was similar outrage.  On some level I even admire your obstinate refusal to accept the reality of the situation; it reminds me of my youth.  You can still continue your campaign to get change though while watching ad free TV.  Why deprive yourself of something you want?

MrMars

Because I refuse to do something that they should be responsible for. If there are ads, I will deal with it, rather than cheat the system

SomeDayKing

We all want the ads removed.

As an otherwise neutral observer of your comment, badddono, "On some level I even admire your obstinate refusal to accept the reality of the situation" sounded much to me like a flowery insult. Congratulations on being older, but less kind.

If we do not advocate for ourselves, who will? Installing any layers of software that continuously intercept and alter network communication reduce the performance and reliability of our systems, and ultimately infect all other aspects of our electronic communication performed via that device, which for most of us today is a large portion of our time. Perhaps because you are older than MrMars, it affects you less or you are less familiar with this?
