Thanks for posting this here Jim,
You mentioned that the tourneys at DBCC are only $20, do they count towards your USCF rating too? And if yes, do you need to be registered in that chess association to take part in it?
Thanks for posting this here Jim,

Yes, they count towards your USCF rating, and no, you do not need to be a member of the DBCC to play in their tournaments. This is an open tournament. However, you do need to be a member of the USCF in order to play in the tournament. If you aren't a member yet, you can register online @ www.uschess.org. I think it's $34.
Hey Jim, is the next one in June 18th? I saw this one at the site:
http://www.daytonabchcc.org/daytonabchcc/3rd%20DBCC%20G50%20Open%20-%202011.htm
I will post as an event here for the C. Florida group.
Do you know if the Deland also has any Tournies? I think that this may be good info for our fellow group members.
Yes, it is this Saturday (June 18, 2011), from 10:00 AM to about 5:00/5:30 PM. It takes place on the Embry-Riddle campus, and the cost is $20. You must be a USCF member to compete. You will play 4 games, but I'm not sure if Paul, the group head, uses the Swiss System or not for pairing up the matches. It seems like it, but, as noted in my forum-opening post, it didn't exactly pan out the way I would've thought. Oh well...
Also, the Deland Area Chess Club is a very active group. I met with them earlier tonight. As would be expected, most of them are chess nerds, but still, a very nice, and eclectic, bunch of guys, from all ages and walks of life. There were at least 10 guys there tonight. Here's their weekly meeting schedule:
So, you can see that they meet quite often, and the best part is that it's free. However, if you aren't in the West Volusia County area, then it doesn't quite help much, I guess. They don't have any tourneys, but several of the guys from this club will play in the DBCC tourneys, or the big ones in Orlando.
If anyone in this group needs to contact me for further info about chess in this area, let me know, and I'll give you my personal contact info. I'm not really up on everything, but I'll give what info I have or know. I'm familiar with what takes place in a tourney, so if you are going to be playing in one for the first time, I can tell you a little about what to expect. If this sounds presumptious, please forgive me, I'm just trying to do what I can to help.
Fulvio asked me to post this up here. It's an entry I made in one of our V/C games. Hope it makes sense...
Don't let my rating up here fool you. It is inordinately high due to time-outs by >2000 players in Tournaments/Team Matches. Go by my USCF rating, which is currently 924, and should drop to 886 after my last tourney (USCF ratings are updated every quarter). But, let me give this caveat about my USCF rating...
I have played in three tourneys, all this year (January, April, and May). It was part of my New Year's resolution to actually play chess on a real board. I had no one to play against, until recently, so tourneys was it. I will also be playing in a tourney @ the DBCC (Daytona Beach Chess Club) Saturday, June 18th. It's on the Embry-Riddle campus. The tourneys with the DBCC are great, because they are only $20, and I am always the lowest-rated player; usually about 20 players.
Anyway, I played 5 games in the January and April tourneys. These were huge events that took place @ the Marriott on I-Drive & Sand Lake, in Orlando. I went 3-2 in both tourneys. The first one, in January, I went in as unrated, and came out as 1001. After the 2nd tourney, I came out as 924. After the 3rd tourney, with the DBCC on May 21st, I went 0-4, and came out 886. But, I played against a 1700+ player my first game, 1388 my 2nd, and two kids, a Russian brother & sister, who were both 1200+.
What's weird is that I played black in three of my four games, and all three games went Rossolimo (1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5...). I tried three different responses in each game, but still lost. Also, I blundered a piece in all four games. I was extremely tired, and had a monster headache; still, no excuse. What I didn't understand is how I kept getting black when I was lowest-rated out of all, and was losing every game. Oh well, go figure!
So, I've actually played only 14 OTB games since starting chess 2 years ago, and all have been in tourneys. Boy, do I need OTB practice. I started meeting with the Deland Area Chess Club (DACC), on Tuesdays @ 19:00 @ the Books-a-Million @ the Seminole Town Center mall. The Daytona Beach Chess Club meets on Wednesdays, at the same time, but it's between the Ocean Center and Ormond Beach, on A1A. Too far for me, as I'm in Deltona.
