I'd like suggestions on best way to teach elementary age kids 8-11 years old.  They know how each of the pieces move but now what next?

Maybe teach them importance of center control? king safety? any specific order?

Also want to make it fun and not have it boring for them.  Love to hear thoughts/suggestions.  Thanks

There are nice endgames with a few pieces, they play with rooks and/or knights, they like it.

Perhaps others know books about this.

Books both fun and instructive, deal with clasic checkmate motifs and simple tactics.

Hi Seltsac,

I've just finished writing a book on this topic that will be released in the next few weeks.  The pedagogy of teaching beginner strategy is something that is often glossed over in chess literature.

After learning the rules, my suggestion is to let the class gain practical experience moving the pieces and making captures through chess variants like loser's chess, bug house, or atomic chess.  Put them into fun class tournament situations, like a ladder or king of the hill.  There are many variants to explore which can also be fun for you!

When you do put together a lesson on opening rules, tactics, or some endgame, remember to hit all three modalities.  A straight up lecture will be forgotten faster than a fart in a windstorm.

Regards.
