Looking For a School Chess Coach

Sort:

I am a freshman in highschool and I recently started a school chess club.  The members of our club are not very skilled players and so at first we had one of my mother's friends "coach" us because she volunteered and knew a decent amount about chess.  Just recently, she resigned from her position because our club meets right after school and she has two elementary school children that she has to look after.  She said that this will be the last time she coaches a team and that for the coming years we should find an actual chess coach.  My question is, does anyone know of or know where I could find a chess coach for a school team?  I live in Union County, PA, USA

THANKS!

First, you need to decide whether or not it'll be a paid position. If so, you might have some luck with the coaches directory here: http://www.chess.com/coaches?searched=1&titled_only=1&country_id=2&skill=3

Also, you probably don't need a titled player. For players who are "not very skilled", an Expert or Class-A player would be more than sufficient. Even a class B or C could be okay, depending on what you really need.

If you want lessons, you could possibly get away with an online coach who gives a skype lesson at the appropriate time, or someone who will go over games for an hour or something. If you just need someone to review games or answer questions, an online coach could certainly do that.

You also could look on USCF's site for chess clubs in your area and see if they have any contacts for you, or look at the top players in your state.

If I can help you more, feel free to message, otherwise, good luck!
