Vacation

We went to Peru and I put myself on vacation on chess.com, but returned to find that all three of my games (one of which I was really close to winning) were won by my opponents "on time" That is so unfair!  Not only did the vacation feature not function, I also posted a comment to all players that I was going away and would see them in 2 weeks.  They still called me on it!  How can you feel good about a win like that?

Most players have the "Auto-win on Time" setting on. If there was vacation failure then your beef is with the site.

At the end of the page "Help & Support". Scroll down and to the left to find "Contact Suppport."

This seems to be a relatively common issue -- can the page not be changed to prompt a user if they try to navigate away from it without first saving their changes?

Here's a puzzler. I don't use vacation time. When I go on vacation, I still play chess. Today I opened up chess.com to find that I was on vacation, I had used a day of vacation, and that the on vacation option was selected. Baffled, I went to the no-vacataion tournament games I have going, and I am still active in those games.

How did I get put on vacation? If I went into vacation mode, shouldn't I have had to agree to forfeit the games before the vacation went into effect?

You still have full time left. Clocks do not stop. They just conntinue on as if you were not on vacation. Since you are a premium diamond member, it automatically sets all other games on vacation.

You probably were put into vacation mode because you were probably close to timing-out in one of your games, so the system automatically put you into vacation mode because you are a premium member.

And, no, you wouldn't have to forefit those no-vacation games, but, your opponents could still claim them if you ran out of time in them.

Re: "I had used a day of vacation"

http://support.chess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/140/0/how-do-i-turn-onoff-my-vacation-status  "Please note that each vacation consumes a minimum of 24 hours of your remaining vacation budget."

If you are on vacation less than 24 hours the remaining time is added to game time.

I just can't figure out how I got on vacation in the first place. It is not something I did. I don't remember doing it. There is no reason for me to go on vacation.

Age, that and coming of age in the 70s?

This is the problem with the site equating vacation and auto-timeout protection.

You were not on vacation but the site was using the status of "vacation" when it might better indicate something like "auto-timeout protection".

furtiveking speculated you were on auto-timeout protection in post 9.

"Note also that all premium members enjoy "auto-timeout protection," meaning that their vacation (assuming they have any left) will be automatically enabled if they are at risk of losing any of their games on time."

Avatar of TheGrobe

As a premium member, if you get within 90 minutes of timing out on one of your games, the system will automatically place you on vacation in order to prevent it.

Aha!

Thank you. Now I know.

I wanted my rating to go down anyway the competition is too stiff.
