With 8 or more players, you have 3 effective trophy.
8 players are enough for the 3 trophies. While with 7 players (or less) a single trophy is awarded.
I often organize small invitational trophies with 3 players, and for 2nd and 3rd place I use a "neutral" image (nobody will win it).
I know you get 1 trophy for eight or less players.
I just set up a ten player and custom trophies are labelled "winner" not 1-2-3 as if its going to be 1 trophy. Did I waste my time designing 2nd and 3rd places trophies? It took me at least 3 minutes.
