just curious how you get a fide rating. do you just show up at a tournament and play? does it cost money to sign up (i'm assuming yes)?

how about iccf? do you just join the site (for free?) and you can play?

just curious since i'm interested in trying an otb tournament mainly for fun (since i'm not great at chess), but if it is expensive to join/play i may hold off for a while.

I don't know if there are differences between Canada and the US. To play a rated tournament in Canada you will have to join the Chess Federation of Canada. This will cost you a little over $40. Then you will get a CFC rating. If the event you play in is also submitted to FIDE for rating, you might get a FIDE rating.

Here's the CFC fee structure. http://chess.ca/membership.htm

You'll need a membership to play. There will also be a tournament fee. Some of the money goes to the CFC in the form of a rating fee, and the rest is usually distributed in the prize fund. As an adult in Ontario expect to pay $43 plus probably around $25 for the tourney. http://chess.ca/ontario.htm AT my club we've always waived the entry fees for first time members (paying their CFC when registering). Ask the organizers about that possibility. http://chess.servegame.com/hamilton/news.php

You don't get FIDE rating from playing in a CFC event. Only a few CFC events are FIDE rated. The Canadian Closed and Canadian Open are the two annuals. Sometimes a special GM tourney is run, but they are rare. Only top Canadians are FIDE rated. I'm not Cry

TC: 30 minutes each

Note that this is "Active" chess, not a "Regular" time control: http://chess.ca/section_5.htm.

B.

Rapidplay

B1.

A `Rapidplay` game is one where either all the moves must be made in a fixed time from 15 to 60 minutes; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment is from 15 to 60 minutes.

You will get a provisional Active rating only. The CFC keeps track of Regular, Active, and FIDE ratings.

I prefer longer games of TC: 40/120, SD/60 or 40 moves in two hours followed by completion of the game in the following 60 minutes. A good long battle can take close to six hours. I once played in a five rounder where every game went well over five hours. Exhausting!

follow up question:

what are the average ratings like in this tournaments? i'm assuming it obviously depends on the number of entrants in the tournament.

what rating should i have (or be assuming i have) to even consider trying one of these tournaments out? for example, if everyone is 2000+ sort of thing then there's no real point of me going at all i'd imagine.

For ICCF go to www.iccf.com all the answers are there.  Most tournaments charge money as they have costs to cover but newcomers to ICCF and the ICCF webserver can get a free match.

FIDE www.fide.com is harder to get ratings in.  There are some open tournaments that are rated but you need to have a certain number of games vs. FIDE rated players, etc.  It is more complicated,  more expensive, etc.  http://www.fide.com/info/handbook?id=11&view=category
