How to Speed Up Tournaments - Help!

i get that, but i think that is the biggest problem.  some players choose to play more quickly than others.  i don't see any way that can be changed.  is there some chance that these games that are "meaningless" to tournaments will be cancelled or that the tournament will be "decided" and then the stragglers' games will be finished later?

Is there a possibility of setting a secondary time limit - games in any given round must be completed with three months from the start of a tournement for example or be adjudacated?

In case you're still looking for examples

The last remaining game yet Group 9 is already decided

Firstly, you should create a forum or something that will allow us to report this specific issue. I suggest that you get member accounts of games that are delaying the inevitable. For example, if I see a game like that, I can easily post a link in that forum, therefore, the game's status (continue it, draw it, or resign it depending on the position) can be determined by one of the staff. This way, the tournaments will go a lot faster.

Here's an example where there are 5 games remaining, yet no permutation of results could change the player advancing to the next round. 2 of the remaining games are between 2 of the participants. Its been 4 months and they haven't finished their first game, how long will the tournament be held because of a combination of 2 extremely slow players?

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Yeah - 2 slow players REALLY slows things down. I think that new time controls, along with the already-implemented no-vacation tournaments, would greatly improve the experience.

I like all 3 of the ideas proposed (I believe) by PerfectGent.

Theempiremaker

The vacation time feature doesn't help play. It's not even a part of chess, but there is the system of Adjournment  which is a part of chess play.

These five games have been going on for a over a month and the other 1000's of games have been waiting months.  It appears there is no impact for who advances.

It really loses the excitement of a tournament when there has been 30 moves done in some games in 4 months... Not very considerate in my opinion, especially when they have no determining factor.

I'll start posting these types of games in this forum then:

One game left, has been going on for ages, should be simple win but they don't know what they are doing.

CoachConradAllison

The other games all finished at least 48 days ago, it is just stupid.

aansel

NrthernKnght that is the correct idea which has been advocated multiple times but not yet been implemented by chess.com admins. It is logical and my guess is requires some sort of programming that is not as trivial as it seems.

EternalChess

I think it should be liek this..

if 2 ongoing games have been going on for 30 days and all the other games finished 20 days ago.. but these 2 ongoing games have no effect on the top 3 results,

the tournament should be finished and the top 3 get there points etc.. and then let the on going games finish -- after the tournament, and if one of these people who are in the ongoing games get 4th place, then he should be awarded a couple points.

I was recently in a tournament (12 people) and one person moves 1 move per 5 days.. ALL our games finished 3 months before.. and i waited 3 months just to be rewarded my points.. this guy got like 6-7th place and he stalled the whole tournament.

Something must be done, almost everybody complains about this.

tonymtbird

you know what should be done about this? people should respect other people's given time to make a move.  If you people have a problem waiting play faster time controls, you have no right to get upset at people for using there time (it's there time to use and you signed up for the tourny KNOWING the time control.)

yeah but seriously.. who makes a move every 14 days? lets be realistic.. people move faster then the time controls..

i find it strange that a person moves ONCE every 5 days.. and before he was moving everyday until he was losing..

In my opinion the time controls are there to not time out, i move like 10 moves a day in a single game (unless the person isnt on), i just do 3 days/move to not time out..,

and also that brings me to my other point..

why wait a MONTH for a tournament to finish when it couldav been finished a month ago but the guy who moves once every 3 days stalls the WHOLE tournament?!

Im just saying why not have the tournament finished and that guy can finish his games after the tournament (unless hes in the top 3 of course)

I agree, you should  respect peoples given time.

But, there have been various attempts to create tournaments that can complete in  a week or two. To my knowledge, every one of them failed to achieve this.

On my page is a tournament that started on April 1. Time one day per move. Open to players only with avg time per move of less than 3 hours.

How is it possible that this tournament is not yet completed?

95% of the players here understood the idea was to play fast, at least a few moves per day. But 5% want me to respect "their given time". Well, respect is a two way street. The one slowing everybody down is not showing respect to the spirit of the tournament.

There are no tools to create a guaranteed fast tournament, because slow players always claim their rights. I think in some tournaments, these right should be forfeit.

aansel

I may be confused but the complaint had nothing to do about people's right to move or force them to move faster--it was more to the point if in a tournament there it is clear which people advance to the next round why should they next round of the tournament not start even if other people are still playing games in the first round. This way the tournament continue and those who are still playing in the first round can continue their game.

schlagle

I've been wondering about this myself but from the other perspective. I seem to be the slow one in this tourney:

http://www.chess.com/tournament/dkos-tourney

I'm concerned that I may be annoying others but I don't want to rush the two last games in my group. What do you all think? Am I too slow? Also, please consider a couple of rounds down the road.
