I thought it worked that it only starts calculating your time per move once your opponent has moved?..

Hi,

I really wanted to join the Chess.com Quick Knockouts (1201-1400) with a 1 day/move time control. But then there's a max time per move of 3 hours. I'm online all day, almost every day, taking turns when they come up. My time sucks because my tournament opponents have a ton of games, most on vacation, and take their turn once every two weeks. Not my fault, yet I'm punished for it anyway.

Not fair. gjemt

Help entry. It is the time you make your opponents wait that counts.

Benjer

3 Hours / move is still very very low ....

I have less than 3hrs per move! and I'm gonna join!

You know what - yes I am quite displeased with this myself!

When I first joined , I had 4-5 games on the go at one point and then my access to internet was cut off for a couple weeks. When I returned not only had I timed out on a whole bunch of games, but then my move time avg was killed.

I've been working hard to get this back in order-  I managed to get my timeout ratio down to less than 10 % and then I was OVERJOYED because I could jointhe knockout for my rating but then  I got this time/move BULL $#%@.

No matter what I do now, I don't see how I could EVER get my time down to what is required as it works on an Average.

Just ranting and blowing off steam.

The time it takes to timeout does not count as no move was made.

See alextybob where the time/move is an extremely low 58.75 seconds. The three days for each of the three timeouts were not counted.

There is a vacation time limit it just seems like there isn't.

CAP

Vacation time is capped so that you can't keep accumulating vacation time forever. It is capped as follows:

Free Members: 30 days

Silver/Gold Members: 60 days

Platinum/Diamond: 90 days

The Avg. time/move refers to a player's historical move speed. Once a player joins the tournament he can take as long as he wants within the time control. In fact he may take the entire time allowed plus vacation if playing many simultaneous games AND still keep his average time/move under 3 hours based on all the games he is playing. Note when on vacation, this time is not counted in the time/move average.

ok what happens if he starts with 8 players keeping the average time right.

after some time the has 3 games left with a 3 hrs average how  does the i day per move work ?

The time control of 1 day/move is the only restriction once the tournament starts.

So the vacation cap means that some day my opponent who has 220 games with 215 of them on vacation will finally have to take her turns and finish the little 12 person tourney that was started on July 4th?

Cannot do anything about it now unless you decide to resign and be happy.

You may have a better time in tournaments where the tournament director uses the Max Avg Time/Move. It is underused but this setting tends to keep out players who are overburdened and depend on daily timeout protection.

You will also want to choose tournaments where you play both games per opponent at the same time.

This is the vacation abuse policy.

Even daily use of auto-timeout protection is not against the site's policy since many players are allowed to do this. You could contact the site and ask that this be considered abuse.

The root issue is that tournament games should be limited similar to the way open seeks are limited.
