Hi, I entered a Swiss tournament and when it started the back line pieces were all in unusual places. It really confused me! Is this usual for all tournaments or is it particular to Swiss ones? Have never played chess with the bishops on a1 and a2, etc before. Thanks.

That is a 960 Swiss tournament I believe. A 960 is when the back row of pieces are mixed up. The Swiss part is that if you win you play winner and if you lose you play a loser. You will play someone at your skill set. Sounds like you are looking to play a rapid Swiss game. Try that
