I took the test. It says I'm a technician. I plan to do tournaments that use the openings recommended for technicians. My own rating +/- 200. Please join Tournament: Monty Trevino Cup https://www.chess.com/tournament/monty-trevino-cup today. What do you think of the idea? What kind of tournament get many participants?

I've just joined your tournament - looking forward to it! And I'm a technician too!

As for what kinds of tournaments get many participants, I'm not sure. If you ask 100 people I suppose you would get 100 different answers. When I run a tournament I just put in what I like, and leave people to make their own choice of whether to join or not.

Just a few suggestions that you could like to try. Or not.

I think it was a great idea to put a link to your tournament in the post above, I'm not sure why it didn't work for you.  https://www.chess.com/tournament/monty-trevino-cup

One thing that I could suggest is that you give as much information about your tournaments to attract players so things like saying it is a 2 day game, no vacation, rating ranges and size of groups or total players may be useful. As this is a thematic game you could even throw in a diagram showing the starting position if you like.

I found that you could also include a link and information to it on your profile page, above where you've written "The test says I'm a Technician."

Include a diagram like above and you could end it with something like

You have had 1200 people viewing your profile and it would be great for them to see you are running a tournament so they can enter if they want. Just remember to change the "24" as you get more people joining up and once the tournament starts to remove the link and information from your profile. I don't too many people will be happy about clicking on a link to a tourment that has already started or finished.

Anyway that's my 2 cents. Like I said above you could try them, but whether you do or not its up to you - its your tournament anyway

Anyway good luck with it and maybe we will be paired up and have a game.

Thanks a lot, KiwiTai! So...

I'm hosting a tournament with the Petrov's Defense as the opening - and you will not believe what happens next!

In Petrov's Defense, Black responds to the attack on his e5 pawn by counterattacking the e4 pawn with the knight. This often leads to a trade of pawns on the e-file.

Pros:

  • Black develops rapidly
  • Very sound
  • Solid defense

Cons:

  • In the open positions that result, White has a slight development lead
  • White has some very drawish options
  • There is a lot of theory in some lines

OK... what may happen next is I host tournaments of each of the other openings recommended for technicians. And I started a club for technicians: please also join Society of Technicians!
