Let's just say that, hypothetically i lived in california and was a 2000 ranked player, but had never played a tournament game.  Would there be a way for me to make some money by playing chess tournaments?

The only place to win large cash prizes is at the big Swiss system tournaments and because so many experienced players have tried that scam, unrated players are usually restricted from winning the big prizes but if you are really rated 2000, you might win one of the lower Under 2000 sections. The problem you will face is that those tournaments always draw multiple sharks and you will quickly find yourself facing quite decent players.

// Of course, if you had never actually played a tournament game, you wouldn't really know your rating, would you?  If you played outside the United States, you are required to report your ratings wherever you may have played, no matter how long ago it was.

But I'm not trying to win large cash prizes.  I know this would never be a get rich quick scheme.  I'm just curious if i waited until i was "skilled" to enter a tournament and did well consistently, how much could i realistically expect to make before my elo caught up with my ability?
