Team/Group Match ethics question.

Hey All!

What's the traditional line of thought, or even ethics, if involved, on belonging to BOTH groups/teams that have a match against each other?

Should one simply abstain from playing in that match?

OR, is it just about the fun, and maybe even switching back and forth, say if the teams play each other again or have multiple matches scheduled?

Because some people belong to TONS of groups/teams and I can't imagine those players NOT clashing against matches where they also belong to BOTH teams.

So, what is the general concensus on this please?

Thanks!

If you're a member of both teams, you won't be able to join both sides :)

The 'join' button won't be there.

Team A challenges Team B. You're a member of both - You can only play in 'that' match for one side (not both)

You can choose which side you want to play for, but you can't in that one match incase you get paired to play yourself :)

LOL I do realize that I cannot PLAY in the match FOR both teams. I'm primarily asking WHICH should I, IF EITHER, play for, or is there an ethical expectation here on chess.com or within my teams that should give me pause for concern?

It's just that I only belong to maybe 6 teams or so, and I already have a nice match available to me for 2 teams that I'm a member of, and I don't want to alienate myself from any one.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts so far on this.

Kohai, you have been EXTREMELY helpful to me today on both topics I've had questions on, and again I am very grateful for you on this. :)

Its entirely your choice which team you play for. For example on who you play for, if the opposing team are alot higher rated, you may decide you want a challenge in the game and join or that you don't want to play anyone higher rated if you're on a losing streak.

These are things you yourself take into consideration when deciding whether to join a team match and if so, which one.

Some people join alot of groups and sign up for as many team matches as they can without feeling obligation toward any one specific group, whereas others have maybe one or two groups they are more active in and prefer to join those team matches over others.

Ok, so I'm getting the sense that it's simply a p-ersonal choice without losing any sleep over! lol

Just here to have fun and learn to be a better player and make new chess friends all over the world!
