It sounds like you think that because your rating is close to the maximum for your group you start as one of the favourites.

If that is right I recommend you abandon the idea.  Rating is not a great guide to the outcome of a tournament at the best of times; but at lower ratings and young ages it is a very poor guide indeed.

Secondly I recommend that you shift your focus from wanting to win to wanting to enjoy the event.

Everyone likes to win but treating victory as the be all and end all is not a great idea. If you lost most of your games but enjoyed yourself, helped your opponents enjoy themselves and learned something - about chess or about yourself - you would not have wasted your time.

As to your question the simple answer is no, there is nothing you can do which guarantees that you will beat every opponent. If there was such a thing the game would long ago have faded away.  Happily it is still going strong and providing fun and challenges to us all.

Manage your time sensibly; treat each game as it comes, ignoring what went before and what is to come; ignore your position in the field - whether that be first or last; and make sure you are considerate to opponents, arbiters and organisers.

I hope you have fun and come away looking forward to the next tournament. :)

Give him a very broad answer or review his games or stay out of his thread then.

edit: If you've got time to waste sparring with me or insulting others, why not make something of yourself, go to his game archive, and use your 2k mind to offer him advice instead of acting ridiculous and not answering his question....

EXcellent advice for sub 100o players. I know this because I am one! I just started in early March and have been focusing on improving, not my rating.Having said that my rating got massacred in the forst couple of weeks because I had no idea what I was doing.I never knew what a fork was (learned very quickly though).I didn't know 4 move check mate or any of the traps. I've been focusing on tactics and am finally up around 1200 now after about 15 hours.

In terms of being able to win a touney because your rating is near the limit, that's total garbage.I beat players rated 1100-1200 routinely.I also lose to players rated 550-600 sometimes. The issue I have and I expect many other (sub 1000) and beginning players do is a lack of consistency and outrageous blunders, as described by the OP.However, there are games where I make some very sounds decisions and even some quite good tactical manouvers and I can beat a player rated a few hundred points higher if I'm on my game.

I'm not sure what the point of this is other than to say what natreb is saying is completely correct.

Just think? Think about what in particular? Why don't you all give him help instead of insulting the way he presents his question.

Not a lot of advice to give for that question.  "How do I beat everybody?"  If his playing strength is actually 954, it's unlikely he's going to beat everyone since there will be people there who are much better than their rating.  If he's already much better than his rating, then he knows how to beat everybody.  He doesn't say how long he has until his tournament, just that he's going to play one.  Eat right, get enough sleep and try to make the best move you can every move and get a little lucky.

Question answered.

Question answered.

I appreciate MrDamonSmith and nartreb and others who appear to have a deeper understanding than those who can't see that he believes he may have a chance of dominating his opponents because he is on the high end of the rating spectrum in an upcoming tournament....

My initial response is not as strong as their responses, but it's better than the kneejerk condemnation of jaded strong players and trolls...

edit: Your advice to him is appreciated as well.

Hello,,

i am rated 954 and am participating in a chess tourney

im playong in under 1000........ is there a way I can beat everyone?

Thats a pretty braod/general question.  But i hope this helps a bit.

Opening:

1. Control the center de-d5-e4-e5

2. Develop bishops, and knights towards the center

3. Castle

4. Connect your rooks

Middlegame:

1. Find any weak squares, weak pawns on the 5th, and or 6th rank.  Weak squares and pawns are things that cannot be defended by another pawn.

2. Weak squares.pawns closer to the center are the ones you want to attack if you have a choice.

Kinda generic i know, but hope it helps.
