Why do they only seem to drink water at chess tournaments?

I've seen many photos of chess tournaments and I have yet to see a bottle of Pepsi, or Fanta or other drink on the table. It always seems to be spring bottled water. Is that the only drink allowed by regulations? That would drive me nuts. I hate water!

There are no specific regulations on drink choice and players should have the option to bring their own drinks.

There may be sponsorship considerations and I don't know how beverage companies handle broadcasts that have recognizable labels, so that might have an impact.

I know Carlsen used to drink orange juice during games.

It is a proof that orange juice is much better than Red Bull, as the record of Magnus/Naka is 13w/4 losses.

Fischer drank apple juice.  Karpov ate yoghurt, and Spassky drank kefir, I believe it's called.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that refined sugar turns your brain into porridge. - Or they could be touting vodka.

You can drink pretty much anything you want.  Water is the drink of choice because it doesnt have any of the "extras" soda has like caffeine, sugar, etc.  The idea is to stay hydrated, and not expose your body to the stuff you dont need.

Being 53 i go to the bathroom a lot while playing because i drink a lot of water.  Im waiting to be accused of cheating.

I'm pretty sure the Anglo-Norwegian company Isklar sponsors a lot of these events, which is probably why you see their bottles sitting on all the tables at so many. Nakamura, of course, is sponsored by Red Bull, so he's always got a can of that sitting next to him (even if you never actually see him drink from it until after the game is finished).

But no, there's no particular rules governing that a player must or cannot drink anything in particular. Depending on the event and the sponsorship there might be specific conditions restricting what's visible to the spectators and viewers. For example: if, say, Pepsi sponsored an event then I doubt they'd want Coca-Cola products visible in the playing hall*, but that wouldn't necessarily restrict a player from drinking Coka out of a non-branded container.

(*That actually reminds me: a cousin of mine drove a truck for a local Pepsi distributor and once got reemed out by his supervisor for carrying a bottle of Dasani (a Coca-Cola product) while on the job. He told my cousin that if he personally prefered to drink Dasani (or anything else not marketed by Pepsi) that was fine, but while on the job he'd have to put it in an unmarked/unlabeled container.)

It's probably vodka. Wink It just looks like water.

Levenfish used to eat a salmon sandwich and drink a glass of vodka just before a game.

Or maybe it's  carrot juice. At Gm blitz battle he was eating baby carrots all the games, he could  be ideal boyfriend for Judy Hops and the worst nightmare for Frank Brenda and co from Sausage party movie :D

No, but they allow you to fume after a heavy loss.
