Why not team tournaments!?

Hi guys!

I was making a tournament the other day and had a thought/idea for a second one before realising the current setup would not really allow for it. My Idea was to have some sort of "world cup" chess tournament where it was players playing for their country agasint others from other countries. The way I would set this up is with either teams made up of say 4 or 5 players playing each other and the group (eg. group a) would show say Australia, USA, India and Russia and all the teams play each other twice and the top two teams advance.

Another way I'd do it is to have say 4 people each from however many countries competing and groups with a player from each country. For example if there were 4 players for each country and 5 countries youd have 4 groups of five. Then obviously the winners of the group stage advance until one winner is left and whoever he/she plays for wins the tournament.

The second thing I've suggested is almost possible however we currently have no control over pairing therefore 4 people from one country may be put in one group whereas 4 from another may be spread between several giving them a much better chance.

I think team tournaments would bring something extra and fun to tournaments, not just for country tournaments but anything we like, males vs females, favourite colours, favourite pieces anything.

Would love to hear anyone else opinion on this?

Team tournaments with divisions included would be excellent. However, fixtures creation is not an easy job and requires a lot of time from the organizer.

There is a world league where countries play each other. Join Team Australia, I imagine they are in it.
