I'm a university professor who researches visual cognition on the frozen prairie of North Dakota. What I lack in playing strength I try to make up for with #scicomm articles about chess, cognitive science, data science, and how studying chess in the lab helps reveal neat features of our visual perception.

I was taught chess at the age of 9. My brother was a coach, and he inspired me to become one too. By the time I was 15, I was already helping beginners experience growth in chess, something that has always been a rewarding experience for me. Today, I have a USCF rating of 1800 and embrace the chance to bring this sense of pride and success to beginner and intermediate level players that want to bring their game to the next level. If you want to know more about me and what I do, check out my Linktree: https://linktr.ee/H1chess

I was 4. My father came to me, bent down, looked deep into my eyes, gave me a toy gun (my first one), and told me, “You’re a big boy now; take care of our family.” I didn’t see him for two years. He left for the war. I was six when he returned. (I didn’t recognize him initially due to his beard)He was surprised to see I knew how to play chess. My Grandma had taught me. Long story short, he took me to a chess school. I got badly beaten in my first game, got angry, and started to train… Long story even shorter, I became a Grandmaster at 19. Then crossed 2,600. Then got very close to breaking into the top 100 players in the world. But then… I fell in love. Not with a person. I fell in love with chess coaching. I began assisting and instructing other passionate chess players. When...

Chess is one of the oldest surviving games on the planet, with our current rule system being mostly intact since the 1400s. It's also the most widely played game on the planet. I take interest in the intersection of these two pieces of trivia: the history of competition. I mostly write about 19th century tournaments in my "Winner's POV" series, but if I find something else that's interesting to write about, I shall (ideas welcome).

I’m a 24 years old university student, currently finishing my teaching degree in English and its Literatures at Universidade Federal do Ceará. I hold both the titles of National Master and FIDE Candidate Master despite being a self-taught player. Despite being only a hobby for me, chess changed my life forever, it gave me many trips and friends. Also, Chessable officially sponsored me a few times, it’s easy to find the whole story out there Oh, and I once beat GM Nihal Sarin as Black, it’s my most notable upset so far.

I played actively in tournaments from 1972-1978....Puerto Rico National Champion in 1976...now playing for fun. Love chess to a fault; rusty as heck right now. Buying books of all kinds: game collections, endgame, opening...etc, but mostly game collections. Favorite players...Bronstein, Tal, Emanuel Lasker, Rubinstein, Geller, Tartakower, Nezhmetdinov, Adorjan. FIDE Rating 2140 (January 7, 2025) Note: Please do not ask me to be your "friend" or to join any club or to play online. My only interest in this site, at this moment, is to write and read interesting articles about chess. Thanks.
