Some time ago we missed the 55th birthday of Douglas Henshall. Born in Paisley, Glasgow he was raised in Barrhead and educated at Barrhead High School; he then joined the Scottish Youth Theatre based in Glasgow, and from there also trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Peckham, South London , but worked hard bouncing between theatre roles in both Glasgow and London as he learned. Since then he has amassed 66 screen credits, starting as did most young Scottish actors in Taggart 1990, but made his mark in Lipstick on Your Collar 1993 and was T E Lawrence in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles also in 1993; he was Levin in Anna Karenina 2000, Professor Nick Cutter in the popular Primeval 2007-9 and had many minor roles plus Collision 2009, but appearing Outlander 2015 and of course as DI Jimmy Perez in Shetland 2013-22 have made him very well-known and respected. He won a BAFTA Scotland 2013 for Shetland and has been nominated twice more for the same plus for In Plain Sight 2016. He now lives in London and is a strong supporter of both St Mirren FC and Chelsea FC wherever he is.
