What did it take to win the World Title?

In 1921 Jose Raul Capablanca dethroned Lasker to become World Champion. Many people thought he was unbeatable, but Alexander Alekhine surprised him and won the title in 1927. Alekhine too was upset in 1935 by Max Euwe, although he won the title back in a rematch in 1937. Alekhine died as World Champion in 1946.

After a record 27 years as World Champion, Emanuel Lasker failed to defend his title in 1921 against Jose Raul Capablanca. The match was supposed to be to eight wins, but after 14 games and the challenger leading 4-0, Lasker resigned the match and the title.

As World Champion, Capablanca rarely lost any games and he seemed destined to keep the title for many years, but Alexander Alekhine shocked the world by winning the title in 1927. They played first to win six games and after a then-record, 34 games, Alekhine won 6-3. and became the fourth World Champion.

Alexander Alekhine first defended his title in a match with the aggressive master, Efim Bogoljubov. The match was best of 30 games and Alekhine won in 25, with eleven wins, five losses and just nine draws. Alekhine demonstrated his attacking abilities repeatedly including in the exciting eighth game.

In 1934 Bogoljubov again challenged Alekhine to a match for the World Championship. Once again, Alekhine was the superior player and won the best of 30 game match 15.5 - 10.5.

With Bogolubov soundly defeated twice, Alekhine picked a new opponent for his next match, the math professor, Max Euwe. Alekhine was a heavy favorite entering the match, but Euwe stuck with him and shocked the world by pulling out a 15.5-14.5 victory! Euwe demonstrated his deep ideas throughout the match, including in the 20th game.

After his shocking loss in 1935, Alekhine challenged Euwe to a rematch two years later. Maybe Alekhine took Euwe more seriously the second time around. He handily won back the title 15.5 - 9.5, becoming the first person to ever reclaim the championship.
