In 1984 Karpov and Kasparov began their rivalry with a match to six wins. Karpov struck first with this game three win and quickly gained a 5-0 lead. However, Kasparov never allowed the final point and after 48 games, the match was abandoned with the score 5-3 in Karpov's favor.

After failing to finish their first match, in 1985 Kasparov and Karpov played a match limited to 24 games. They played all of them and when the dust settled, Kasparov became the 13th World Champion by a score of 12.5-11.5. Here's the famous 16th game.

After Kasparov became World Champion, he had to defend his title the next year in a third match against Karpov. This was another tight match, but again Kasparov refused to lose and retained his title 12.5-11.5. Here's the key 22nd game, which brought Kasparov the desired 12th point, keeping the Championship.

In 1987 Karpov qualified for a fourth match against Kasparov and it was the most exciting one yet! Karpov won the second game (see below) and kept the initiative throughout the match. Kasparov had to win on demand in the final game to tie the match 12-12 and keep his title.
