I’m a quiet presence at tournaments. I listen more than I speak, and two-way post-mortems can be difficult for me.

Over the last few years, I’ve made a key discovery that has helped me stay connected to the chess world during difficult times: the power of giving a brief new greeting or two per day.

Unlike a customary handshake with an opponent, it’s unforced. As every minute during a tournament is precious, taking a moment to acknowledge another - especially a younger player - carries real meaning. It’s a small gesture, but for me it has been a lifeline.

My style is structured: I greet one person at a time, not a group. I say their name, say mine, and keep it simple. I don’t linger or talk too much - that can hurt focus. I walk away satisfied, often just from saying my name or offering a quick congrats.

My practice is new, relative to how long I’ve been playing. It’s not easy but it has kept me afloat when I’ve been struggling. It’s a reason I continue to play tournaments even when not in top form - it gives me a chance to mentor in small ways and show kindness within my limits.
