My teacher, Shihan Watson, gave me a hint one day in class. We were practicing a drill where you and your opponent touch forearms. Then, you use that to read your opponent's next movement. He told me it was like chess, where you both have the exact same options, but the person who moves first has a slight initiative. However, if he lets that get to his head, the defender can use that to his advantage. Long story short, I bought a chess book the next day and have been studying ever since.
