Summary: Thanks for reading my newsletters. After exploring a lot of options I have put aside chess.com and chesskid.com and will run most events on Lichess and Tornelo (with or without the camera).

Hampstead online, this is a chance to play slower games, is coming up this weekend on Tornelo - see below for details. We did try this on chess.com but the software throws players out and won’t let them back in for many (some excellent) reasons. But if you arrive late you can’t get a bye or do re-pairings, which is wasting a lot of playing time. Lichess is improving daily, but you still get to play anonymously. On Tornelo we play under our real names and you can recreate the real Hampstead atmosphere by playing the games on your phone in the cupboard under the stairs. As long as you are on camera throughout...
Cheating. It seems to be a real issue online, and this is even when I know the user and have their real name and profile in front of me! Some of you have advised me not to have cash prizes, or to withhold the cash prizes for at least a week to allow platforms to investigate allegations of computer use. What do you think? For the Blitz Arenas on Sunday we have introduced an entry fee and terms and conditions for prize winners PLUS a RATING PRIZE. This should make it more attractive to club players and less attractive to sharks… but let’s see.

Open and Under 1700 (ECF Under 135). You must have an identifiable national profile such as ECF or a FIDE (not essential to have a grade or rating) to enter. FIDE blitz ratings apply. If you don’t have a FIDE Blitz use your ECF Rapid converted- [ECF x 7.5 + 700 = FIDE]. 10 minutes each and no increment. Seven Rounds from 7.30pm to 10pm with an intermission - £5.00 to enter - Prizes based on entries will be shared. A video conference link will be provided. Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2020 - The World Famous Hampstead Congress goes online! - Open, Under 1900, Under 1700 sections, numbers permitting. You must have an identifiable national profile such as ECF or a FIDE (not essential to have a grade or rating) to enter. FIDE standard ratings apply. If you don’t have a FIDE standard rating convert your ECF grade [ECF x 7.5 + 700 = FIDE]. 60 minutes each plus 10 seconds a move. Three Rounds on Saturday at 10am, 1pm and 4pm then two rounds on Sunday at a slightly later time of 11am and 2pm. Prizes based on entries will be shared.
