Noah's Ark Trap #1
This trap can be used when you are playing BLACK!
"C71:Ruy López Opening: Morphy Defense, Modern Steinitz Defense, 5.d4" opening.
0) Preview:
This is a preview of the trap for those who are hasty!
The trap is completely harmless to the BLACK pieces game, it consists of baiting the WHITE Queen to take the d4 pawn to win a bishop for 2 pawns at maximum by restricting its moves.
1) The Opening:
The reason why knowing this trap is so essential, it's because Ruy López is very popular among every rating division in chess, and it isn't risky. You can still have a very solid game if the trap fails.
We begin with classic Ruy López opening, the WHITE needs to refuse the exchange Bxc6 when BLACK a6, otherwise this trap can't be used in your game.
The move d4 made by WHITE intends to control the center and use the pin by the bishop over the knight to win a piece if BLACK makes a blunder. However, BLACK can set a trap in this position, without risking the game evaluation.
2) Setting The Trap:
The trap is set here in this phase, after d4 this is a forced sequence. In order to make this BLACK always should start the trade using the knight. The whole point here is that WHITE bishop is running out of moves.
After the BLACK trade... In this position WHITE should never Qxd4, this is a blunder that will cost a bishop in exchange for 2 BLACK's pawns.
3) How to Defend:
A real trickster should know how to make traps, and how to avoid them when it's necessary. I will show the strongest line that can be used to avoid this trick, be aware, if you are playing BLACK you can use those moves to continue your game normally.
The move a4 opens a new square for your bishop, and still attacks the point of b4. TIP: You can use the "a" column pin to set new traps. Reminder, don't do Qxd4.
4) How to Execute It:
I will show 2 ways to execute the trap, these are the strongest plays WHITE can use to minimize the damage.
Now BLACK has the initiative plus a bishop!
