Man I remember when I was in the army. I was a cavalier in the horse guard; a real mean dude. There were two of us actually…always had each others’ backs. Those were the days. We were a small but elite fighting force. We fought for valour, principle and honour. We saw everything in black and white really. You had to be able to defend and attack at the same time…always trying to pin down the enemy while looking over your shoulder to protect the king. Never get too far away. The king was getting old of course. He just wasn’t the man he used to be. That’s what happens when you marry a woman half your age. We’d much prefer to tuck him up inside one of his castles when we could persuade him. Often insisted on coming out with us though. He couldn’t walk far at his age but he could still defend himself if he had to. Religious man. Probably why he employed that bishop. Man that guy was violent. Ex templar I think. Would happily stare down a knight-at-arms. Glad he was on our side. Actually there were two of them come to think of it; and never the twain should meet! Couldn’t see eye-to-eye. Those mad churchmen had no time for each other. Wouldn’t even work together in battle. Always had some angle. Not like the knights; brothers in arms we were; always better working together and looking out for each other. And we’d go anywhere and fight anyone for our queen. Not that she needed our help mind. She was a lady could look after herself. Good looker too. Her reputation ranged far and wide through the land. Many’s the time she saved all our skins. Legend had it that she could take on two whole castles single handedly…Glad I was in the officer class though…those serfs were just pawns in our hands. Many were poorly armed and went to their deaths. ‘March straight over there towards the enemy son, eyes forward. You’ll be ok. We’ve got your back. Keep your wits together and you’re in line for promotion’ Yeah right. Many’s the poor wretch was sacrificed in the heat of battle…That’s how I remember it anyway…More drugs please nurse.
